A few thoughts on Genesis Chapter 5
1) Adam returned to God and lived out the rest of his days for God offering sacrifices. There are two reasons from this chapter I think this is true: 1) how could Cain and Able know to offer sacrifices if they did not have an example? Someone had to start this, most likely Adam and Eve after God made the first sacrifice to provide them with clothing. 2) Seth is said to be made in the image and likeness of Adams, as a sort of replacement for Able, in comparison to Cain who is not described this way, (he was sent away by God after killing Able). What a message of grace and forgiveness! It kinda seems fair to our sinful minds that God should offer us salvation since we were not part of the original sin, that somehow we are better than they were (which in our natural state is not true). So the fact that God will let the ruiner of this creation into salvation, how beautiful and gracefilled that is!
2) It is possible to walk with the Lord and live life. Enoch walked with God & God even took him home without death. But, he had a family and lived as family man for 300+ years… And we think 80 years is hard!
3) Names matter. God cares about individuals and since He cares, names matter. He made sure each and every name on this list was recorded, the good and the bad. God knows all the personal details of each of our lives and He cares about them.
All in all, who would have thought a list of names could hold so much information and insight! It’s amazing that when we take time to study the bible, even the ‘boring’ bits hold great wisdom and insight.
