A musing on Gen 7 & 8, comparing his stay on the ark to our COVID-19 lockdown.
I never realised how long Noah spent in the ark with his family and the animals. I always knew it was 40 days and 40 nights, which doesn’t sound so bad. (Until you’re stuck in lockdown for that long 😅)! But then, after the rain stopped, the air had to dry out for another 150 days! I never stopped to dwell on it. Noah was in the ark for a long time, a lot longer than 40 day, in fact is was actually 370 days!!! That’s over a year! That’s a very long time to be stuck with your family and a bunch of smelly animals.
Currently we are in lockdown state, where we are only allowed out for work, solo (or family) exercise and essential travel (like buying food). It’s only been just over a month and we are already going crazy! We are starting to get irritable, board, daunted by the prospect of not knowing when this will end.
How did Noah survive? We can’t last one month without starting to fall to pieces, how did he survive over a year? Over the last few weeks I have come to the conclusion, he truely must have walked with God. Because, 1) if the last few weeks are anything to go by, without God you would go crazy and 2) it requires high levels of patience and trust heading into the unknown like that. Noah was able to trust God in the uncertainty of it all.
If there is anything which we can learn from Noah’s time of uncertainty and confinement on the ark, it’s that with God all things are possible – it is possible to remain sane and peaceful during these hard times if you turn you’re eyes upon Jesus.
