Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31:31 ESV
Today (in Australia) is Mothers’ day. The one day per year we celebrate mothers. What a lovely day it is. It is a day where we appreciate everything our mothers and the mothers around us do everyday. The day where we thank them for all the stuff we should be thanking them for every day. Despite the irony, mothers day is and should be special. Motherhood is one of the most underrated and undervalued professions of our time. A while back a video about the world’s hardest job interview went viral. The interviewer is interviewing all these elite candidates for the world’s toughest job, and as they are hearing this description, no breaks, 24 hours per day/ 7 day weeks, constantly being in demand, working every holiday, no pay etc. The interviewees thought the interviewer was crazy, nobody would do that job for extraordinary amounts of money, let alone for none! Then the interviewer says that millions of people do this job and even some of the candidates and then it clicked. Mothers. Mothers have one of the toughest jobs ever, there is no breaks, no pay, and never really any holidays, it’s a full time job for 20-30+ years. And yet they do it without complaint.
While many people say we should be more careful of people who can’t be mothers or others who have a big impact, I think its vitally important that we do take the time to celebrate this marvelous group who make such huge sacrifices every day.
I know my own mum has sacrificed more than we could ever know for her five kids. It certainly hasn’t been an easy road for her, but she (along with Dad) has raised 5 children, three to adulthood and two still on their way. And all of us (one girl & four boys!!) love her, respect her and value her. Every one of her boys who through out school were the epitome of cool, would give her a hug regardless of who was or wasn’t around.
So, a massive thank you for all the mothers out there! Thank you to all the physical and spiritual mothers, while your willing sacrifices may never be known, the enormity of your impact and value may also never be known on this side of eternity either. God bless you all!
