A daily thought.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 10:23 ESV

While the writer of Hebrews makes this sound simple, practically speaking it is quite challenging. We are to hold fast without wavering, that is without doubting or losing hope, because we know God is faithful to fulfill His promises. What a challenge! No matter what comes our way, this is how we are meant to live. The writer did not say to do this just when things are going well or when we feel strong and empowered. Rather, this is not written in a way which is open to debate, it is an encouragement, an exhortation to a commitment to a particular way of life.

So the question remains, why should we live with such a hopefilled, pragmatic and no-nonsense approach to life? What makes it worth it? Why should we even have such a solid hope that can withstand everything life throws at it? Why would the writer even exhort people to such a challenging way of life? Because He who promised is faithful. Who is faithful and why should we care? God is faithful and we see this proven time and time again, from the Old Testament, to Jesus on the cross, to the lives of the disciples, to our contemporaries and even in our own lives if we are willing to look. God has proven Himself to be faithful to His promises. Even to the point where as part of His character God can not lie, so therefore whatever He promises He is going to do, He is bound to fulfill. It is important to remember that God is not bound to fulfill His promises because of us or anything we have done, and while this may be a sobering reminder, this is actually really good news! Because, this means nothing we can do can take God’s promises away either. That is, God’s promises do not rest on us or our works, rather they rest on Himself and His perfect, loving, infallible nature.

What a comfort it is, knowing that we can hold fast to our hope, as the author admonishes us too, because we can rest assured of God’s goodness, love and most importantly, His faithfulness to do what He has promised.
