A daily thought ~ Being Young.

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,
Psalm 119:2 ESV

I love Psalm 119, especially the first section (up to verse 17/18). I love the practical advice it provides for living a godly life. How often I find myself wishing that there was just a set of rules so I could know what is right and what is wrong. I yearn to do the right thing but sometimes it seems impossible to know what that is. That’s one of the reasons I love this psalm so much, it’s one of the few places which gives more general, yet practical advice. I realise that the bible is full of advice and information on how to live, but often it seems to take either a specific approach or a philosophical approach.

This psalm also stands out from other parts of the bible in the way it is written as if to a young person trying to find their way in the world. And as a young person (especially a few years ago) this was really helpful because like unlike the way to Paul address Timothy as a church leader (which I’m not!), it is written so that any young person seeking God could pick it up, see the wisdom and how to apply it. Having sections like this which break down that which is important into something simple, are so helpful and encouraging!!

The last point I’d like to make on this psalm ties in with the other two, it speaks exactly to where we find our own hearts. I love the way when I’m reading this section it resonates with me and I can see how it relates to my own life. This is actually a very important factor in determining the supernatural credibility of the Bible. The fact that a single text written so many thousands of years ago, can unpack and explain so clearly the human heart today is a great example of God’s work. Not only His work in writing the Bible but also His work in creating us and knowing us.

How encouraging it is that the God who created everything, knows us so intimately and personally that this book can still be explaining and speaking truth to our hearts today.
