For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you..
Matthew 6:14 ESV
Forgiving is hard! Nobody really likes forgiving someone who has wronged them a lot (or just a little!). We inherently don’t want to forgive, we want justice. Not that we really even want justice either, what we really want is revenge. We want that person to be fully punished so they know and feel the extent of what they did to us.
But! This is completely contrary to what the Bible says on this matter. Jesus calls us to forgive, even up to 70 times 7. In this verse, Jesus says part of our own forgiveness from God comes from our own forgiveness of others. While I’m not saying we are only saved of we forgive every single other person, I’m not qualified to comment on that. What I am saying is that this verse shows us how quick we are to need forgiveness from God but we don’t extend that same grace to others.
If we are to truely live a life that brings honour and glory to Jesus we have to be as willing to forgive others as Jesus is to forgive us. If we don’t forgive, how will they ever understand the concept of God’s forgiveness?
