But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:6 ESV
Prayer. The secret to Christianity. I love the fact this verse is not only in the Bible but is also a direct quote from Jesus. It brings prayer back to its roots, it strips away all pretence and performance, reminding us of the true and only purpose of prayer – communion with God.
How easy it is when we pray to either put on a show of it or have half a million things going on and get distracted every few moments. It is hard to be vulnerable and genuine. If we’re honest, very few people, possibly nobody actually wants to be genuine and vulnerable. It is uncomfortable, it hurts, its inconvenient. We hate to acknowledge the sin and brokeness in our own lives, particularly in the honest and confronting way true prayer tends to.
I guess the challenge and encouragement from this verse is simple, take away all the distractions and opportunities for pride and instead humble yourself before God and be honest with Him. He knows anyway, so there’s no point trying to be anything else.
