The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
What a beautiful picture this is, God Almighty, not far away, ruling from a distant throne, but rather intimately close. In His closeness He isn’t lording over us and condemning us, which He would be justified doing, but instead He rejoice over us, calms our fear with His magnificent love and celebrates over us with loud singing. Wow.
I often find myself overwhelmed and terrified of God’s majesty and rule, that I forget that He rejoices over us too. I find it so much easier to envisage an angry, judgemental God who will not except anything less than perfection, than a God who rejoices over me and steps into my life and my mess to calm my fears and celebrate my existence.
Its such a humbling picture to behold and perhaps that’s why, as humans, we tend to shy away from it. We’d prefer a removed god over a personal God and Father brought close by His own personal sacrifice.
