A daily thought ~ servant leadership

The greatest among you shall be your servant.
Matthew 23:11 ESV

What a fascinating truth this verse reveals. In the flesh when we look for leaders, we look for the loudest, boldest, most confident and charismatic character. A person who can talk the walk and look the part. But the bible challenges us, do they walk the walk?

You can have a greatest communicator, yet if they are without love, they are nothing but noise. You can have the best character but if they are not walking with the Lord, they are nothing.

The secret behind good Christian leadership is service. This is how Moses led, how David led and most importantly and perfectly how Jesus led. Where or when else do you find a leader who is willing to go to such the extent Jesus was willing to go to serve?

While it may be rare for the king to sacrifice himself or lead a battle charge for the greater good of his people (a noble thing to be sure), when else in history, outside of the Christian faith, can you find a person of such great power serving the outcast, the poor, the widow, the sick and powerless. Exactly the people who would be worthless in any power play, people who quite literally have nothing to give in return.

But this wasn’t meant to stop with Jesus, this was His command to the disciples, the greatest among you will be your servant. How much does yours and my life reflect this? Are we more of a king or a servant? How are we or could we be serving others today?
