Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
Colossians 3:12 ESV
We are so quick to judge when it comes to what a person wears. Maybe we might assume they are a sportsman, businessman, or hipster, or perhaps something much deeper or darks – a slut, a prude, a worthless waste of space.
You would never do that you exclaim, but have you ever participated in those conversations, or even “passing” comments about a girls skirt length, top or how much skin she is/isn’t showing? All of these harken back to a judgement we have already made about a person in our heart.
How on earth do we get these assumptions about a whole person’s existence from what they wear?!? Its a ridiculous notion when you stop to think about it, how often do the richest men in world dress casually or how often do the poorer people spend exorbitant amounts of money on credit cards to be “in with the crowd”. And that’s just the shallow level! Since when is money or appearance a good judge of character, morals or even value? So often you find the most generous, genuine, happy people in the poorest places.
So what does the bible say about what we wear? While Paul does make a few cultural comments in a some of his letters, as a whole, God is much more concerned with the state of your heart that what you put on your body.
Dwell on these things, ponder them, commit them to heart until you truely understand and live them out as part of your life.
Compassion. Are you full of compassion for those around you, regardless of how they behave?
Kindess. Are you kind? It seems simple, yet is such a hard quality to embody.
Humility. The one trait as soon as you say you have it, is the second you don’t. Are you willing to be poured out for the sake of others?
Meekness. Jesus Himself call the meek blessed, for they shall inherited the earth. What a counter cultural quality.
Patience. Are you willing to suffer for a long time? Are you long suffering for others or situations in your own life.
While this may seem like an overwhelming list, just remember we are Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved.
