A daily thought ~ unity in diversity

that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”
1 Corinthians 12:25‭-‬27 ESV

Unity in diversity. This is a phrase the Dr Ravi Zacharias was very fond of when talking about universities as that is where the word university originally came from and meant. While times have changed and words and places have strayed from their original purpose and meaning, the bible continues to remain the same.

What this verse so clearly expounds, is this idea of unity in diversity in the church. While we are one body, the church (unity), we clearly still remain individual members of it (diversity).

So while we have struggles and successes as individuals, we are to respond collectively. We are to get involved in the lives of our church family, intimately, not just shallow small talk, but know them well enough to be able to share in their joys and sufferings.

But why would we want to do this? Everyone knows maintaining relationships is handwork and sharing in others struggles, even harder again! Because we are to care about one another!! But why care? While this isn’t answered directly in this particular passage, this chapter is the climax to the most famous chapter in the whole bible on love, 1 Corinthians 13.

Its important to note, Paul spent a whole chapter expounding this concept of unity in diversity before he went on to talk about love. We are called to love as Jesus loved, serve as Jesus serve and bring all honour and glory to Him by the way we live our lives.

During this challenging season, it is so vital we don’t lose sight of both love but also the importance of unity in our diversity.
