Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord , and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3:7 ESV
Humility is one of the most important but perhaps overlooked parts of the Christian life. We often flock to the most outgoing, charismatic, proud and confident person. Instead we ought to remember that if we are to fear the Lord and turn away from evil we can not be wise in our own eyes. We can not be proud, confident in our own abilities and still fear God. It simply isn’t possible. God strength is made perfect in our weakness, not our confidence.
While this may sound a little harsh, it simply is true. We have to be reliant on God if we are to be used for His kingdom. Its also important to bear this in mind when considering the leaders and people we desire to have power or authority in our lives or in the lives of people around us. Its very easy to get caught up in the hype of a person who knows what to say and who to say it too, the type of person who is completely confident in their own abilities. Its a shame to miss the Godly person who knows its not them but God who is working for the sake of a shallow, worldly person. Its important to watch carefully the people in power (or working their way there) and ensure we are valuing the right sort of person, the Godly attributes rather than the worldly ones.
