So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
Every day things. God cares about them all, from house work, to work work, to tending to children or others, to simply eating and drinking, God cares about all the aspects which make up our lives.
It is so important to bear this in mind constantly, to be continually renewing our minds in Christ Jesus. We so often fall into the trap of wanting more, we want grandeur, fame, pomp, the works. Whether our desire is for great works for God or man, we want more than what’s in front of us to do. But what we forget when we fall into this mindset, is that its not the big things which make a huge difference to God, most people are able to do one off acts, but its the everyday things which really show character. Are we able to give God glory while we eat and drink? Do we continually look to Him for His glory and guidance?
I was reading a book today and it commented on how many hours the “great theologians” of history spent in prayer and the figures are astounding. They spent anything from a minimum of 1.30 hours in a single session each morning to some of the older guys 8-9 hours without stopping. The average seemed to be between 2-4 hours minimum each morning plus time throughout the day. Wow! What commitment and love! Its no wonder really that they were able to accomplish so much for the Kingdom when they spent so much time with its King.
It’s important to notice that the prayer came first, then the mighty acts. God works when a person is fully committed to Him and engaging Him in all aspects of their lives. While God is at work in all situations, we need to be honest with ourselves about how well we know the King. If we aren’t honouring Him with all the everyday aspects of our lives, how could we ever expect to do great things?
Great things don’t become great in and of themselves, great things come from a foundation of faithfulness in the small things. Are we building the foundation or are we trying to build on sand?
