Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

What to do next? This is a question I ask myself daily, well, probably multiple times per day if I’m honest. Sure I have dreams and hopes, but largely this question for me revolves around wanting to live for God and do whatever He wants me to do… which is hard, often it even feels impossible to know what that looks like. Should I go for this job or that job, this career or that career? Should invest in this church or that one? How much should I invest in different people around me?
I guess these questions just show what I already know to be true, I’m just human with infinite time, energy and resources and I don’t want to miss a single minute of what God has instore for me.
So what can I do about this? How can I figure out the mystery of life? Well, while figuring out the mystery of life is a bit out of our scope, at the bible does give us a few pointers on how we can live a God honouring, fulfilling life. For the sake of space and clarity, I’m not going to enter into the debate regarding the level of depth of Gods will in our lives, whether or not He has a singular purpose we can miss or a general purpose for us. But I believe the insights from this verse are equally applicable.
God simplifies it down to Trust, Lean, Acknowledge. We are to trust in God, lean on Him alone and acknowledge Him. Why? Because then He will make our paths straight. So what is the secret then, to a fulfilling, purpose filled, God honouring life? To trust God, no matter what does or doesn’t happen, give up self reliance, that is, lean solely on God for understanding and guidance, and acknowledge Him in everything we do.
Sounds simple hey? I wish it was! But I am thankful that I have a place I can turn my questions too, knowing the one who made me, know my heart will answer them and still love me the same.
