…for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:13 ESV
Boy, I love this verse! I know I say this a lot, but Philippians would have to be one of, if not, my favourite book in the Bible. I just love how real and relatable this book is and I often turn to it when I’m not sure where else to go.
This verse has personal meaning to me because it has brought great comfort to me over the years. When I am stuck and feeling overwhelmed by the desire to do good things for God but am unsure or unable to do those things I turn to this verse.
Listen to what it says, God works in us, to will and to work His good pleasure- it is God who puts these desires in you and makes it possible to complete the actions. While the actions are important, and you should be working towards living out what God has given you to do, it is important to remember that the desires comes from God. You don’t need to get frustrated when things aren’t happening as fast or how or when you want them to happen, because the desire comes from God. He knows how long things take, He is guiding you for His good pleasure. The actions may take time and that is okay. The important thing to remember is God is still working, He will make the actions possible in His timing and do the thing whenever the thing arises.
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself, God is gracious and He knows the desires of our hearts and puts them (the godly desires) in our hearts Himself so we can trust that when the time is right, He will bring it to pass. All we have to do is be faithful, both with the desires and with our actions.
