A daily thought ~ confession and cleansing

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
Psalm 51:1‭-‬2 ESV

Have mercy on me, O God… I adore this psalm, it is definitely one of my most loved passages of scripture. How often does my heart cry out to God? I am in desperate need of cleansing and nothing short of the blood of Jesus will do. I love how David paints this picture on how mercy and love, iniquity and cleansing, transgressions and sin all combine in our salvation.

The thing that stands out the most to me in this song is the realness of it all. You can feel what David was going through, the honesty and repentance behind the words, the plea for salvation. David’s hope, despite everything he had done, was still in God. He knew that the only being big enough to forgive his sins, was God and he was confident that God would. God will not despise a contrite heart or a broken spirit.

We can come to God today no matter what state we are in, no matter what we have done. All we have to do is be honest, humble and trusting before God and His steadfast love will blot out our transgressions and wash away all our inequities.
