Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Mark 11:24 ESV
How often do you ask things of God yet He doesn’t answer? Many people have come up with all sorts of ideas as to why. Not enough faith, not asking hard enough, you’re not working hard enough towards it achieving it, its too big, too small etc. I’m sure you’ve already heard them all!
So what does Jesus have to say about prayer? Well, first of all the people Jesus is telling this amazing statement to, are His close friend, His disciples. So, we in order for this to apply to us as well, we need to consider, are we living in this close relationship with Jesus, being with Him and learning from Him all day everyday?
Secondly, we are to come to God with clean hearts. In the next verse, Jesus reminds the disciples that when they come to pray, if they have ANYTHING against someone else, they are to forgive them. Thats pretty crazy stuff hey!? Yet, when you stop to think about all the stuff Christ has forgiven us for and the price He had to pay to forgive us, it makes perfect sense (not easy, but understandable), we are to be imitators of Jesus into the culture around us.
Finally, there is great power in prayer. If you go back to the proceeding verses, you see two pretty amazing displays of power through prayer. The first is the fig tree, Jesus is disappointed the tree isn’t bearing fruit when it should so he cursed it, and when they went past the next day, it was withered up and dead. The second thing is Jesus own description of what prayer can do, even casting mountains into the sea is possible if it is done in God’s will, without doubt. How incredible is that?!
So, we must challenge ourselves to draw into God, to love Him and learn from Him each day so we might become like him. And as we become like Jesus, we can rest assured He will guide and answer our prayers for His glory..
