For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 ESV
Our wages are death, we ought to be paid what our labour is worth. Before someone does a job, you agree what a fair price is and when it is complete you receive what is owed. The problem our labour is sin, an utter abhorrence before God. In the garden God laid out the contract, disobey God, believe that you are better and know better than God – that earns death. Or abide in God and His garden, and you will thrive, flourish and live. Sounds pretty simple hey?.
Yet here we are, on the other side of the fall. We picked our contract and now wages are owing. Unfortunately we in our foolishness, picked the first contract, we decided we wanted to choose our own path but in doing so lead ourselves down the path of destruction. Our labours are sin and our wages are death.
But, that’s not the end of the story, God came down from eternity to earth in the person of Jesus the Christ who offered in exchange for our wages a gift. Not just any gift, a gift of life. You see, as the one who’s contract we had signed, He was the only one with the power to be able to exchange our wages. In His perfection, He took our death and destruction upon Himself, which in and of itself was the most incredible gift. Yet He took it one step further and offers us the most perfect and loving gift possible, the gift of life. In exchange for our death, He offers us His life.
