Yesterday we heard that a young person died while climbing a mountain near our house. Initially, while being sad for the family, we were annoyed. That mountain is often closed and it’s a lovely place to hike and enjoy. All sorts of assumptions were made. He must have been foolish, an idiot, inexperienced. Why was he climbing that mountain anyway?
Today we got news that the young man was the younger brother of one of my husbands dear friends. A smart, kind, dedicated young man. An incredibly skilled climber who had done many more challenging and dangerous climbs before. My husband just stood there in shock and grief, trying to process how on earth that could be him.
You see, that’s the problem when we make assumptions. When you don’t know the full story. When you assume that you are better than everyone else. If we hadn’t received that email, we would have just continued with our made up facts while completing missing the truth.
May this be a lesson to us, never make assumptions, never pretend you know everything. The truth may be much closer to home than you could ever realise.
