spiritual fruit ~ what is spiritual fruit?

Guess what! To start off this journey, we are going to be covering one of my favourite topics, the Fruit of the Spirit. So, what is spiritual fruit? Well, the fruit of the spirit scripture is found in Galatians 5:22-23 and over the next few weeks I am going to be covering the spiritual fruits found it that classic passage. I absolutely adore talking (well, writing) about the way God works in our lives and where better to start than with the fruit He is growing in us?!

One on my favourite analogies in the bible is that of the gardener. It is one of the predominate themes of Jesus’ last proper conversation with his disciples on the night of the last supper (see John 14-17). Its beautiful that even in the midst of His suffering and the anguish of the suffering He knew He was about to face, He took the time to stop and encourage them. And He chose, the imagery of this loving gardener constantly tending his garden to ensure not only its survival in a harsh world but that it thrives. Wow! So beautiful!

So, you may ask, how do we know what is spiritual fruit? This is where the fruit of the spirit come in, the mark of thriving, of flourishing is good fruit. (Which is what the fruit of the spirit are!) This is how we can know that we are part of the true vine, Jesus, and are growing with Him. If there is good fruit, the plant is healthy, if there is never any fruit or only bad fruit, you know that plant is unhealthy or even dying. Galatians also warns us to know what fruit is growing in our lives. Good fruit is from God but bad fruit, like, envy, anger, jealousy, impurity comes from the flesh, and we know that the desires of the flesh are against and in direct opposition to the desires of the Spirit.

Lets examine our own lives and see what spiritual fruit is growing there. Are we cultivating joy, love and peace? Or are we allowing (or even encouraging) strife, enmity, anger and impurity to grow?

In my life, the main fruit I’m cultivating at the moment is self-control, its so hard in the season of chaos I am in but I believe that is what God is calling me to work on and slowly but (hopefully!) surely I am beginning to see spiritual buds appear.
