Genesis Chapter 10 – Geneologies part 2
If you’re anything like me, you may have wondered how places got their names. Here in Australia, the names are generally, pretty self-explanatory; you’ve got Boundary Road, Sandy Creek, Brisbane River, Sunshine Coast etc. That is, the name generally describes the place or the person living there. It makes a fun road trip game, speculating how they came up with the place names as you drive past.
Recently, my curiosity has spread to the bible, how did the places we hear about end up with their names? It’s hard to imagine anyone naming these great cities and countries! But when you read through Genesis chapter 10, through the dry geneologies, some names start to jump out. Names like, Egypt, Canaan, and Nineveh. Sound pretty familiar huh?! How cool is that! Only one or so generation after the flood, these guys were born and then they had families, which the bible says turned into clans, cities and nations.
It never ceases to amaze me what you can find in geneologies! I wonder if any of those guys, had any idea that great cities and nations would one day bear their names…?
