A daily thought ~ holy fear

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Proverbs 9:10 ESV

I have always found this one of the hardest scriptures to understand. I realise the concept is pretty simple, but I always got stuck on the word, fear. I have trouble disassociating the word from terror or danger. So I spent many years thinking I was supposed to be terrified of God and being very confused how that related to wisdom.

In later years, I realised what the bible is asking for instead of terror is respect. A sort of honouring and putting first of God and allowing our minds to be filled with His wisdom as we focus on Him.

This becomes a whole lot less confusing, because God is the ultimate source of all wisdom, it makes sense that the more time you spend dwelling on Him and learning to value His opinions, the more of His wisdom you learn.
